Südtirol Ultra Skyrace
Extreme running race along the high mountain trail

The Südtirol Ultra Skyrace will return in 2021

Bolzano, 25 June 2020 – After careful deliberations, the organizers of the extreme mountain run along the horseshoe shaped Hufeisen tour in the Sarntal Alps have recently decided to cancel this year’s edition due to the currently still uncertain situation regarding “Coronavirus Phase 2”. Instead, the organising committee will focus on the coming year - the eighth edition of the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace shall take place from 27 - 29 August 2021.

The experienced organisers have thought long and hard in recent weeks and months, about how they could stage the popular and internationally renowned extreme sports event in spite of the Coronavirus crisis, and most importantly, as safe for all participants as possible. However, just 2 months before the planned start at the end of August, they are raising the white flag.

The organisers stress: “As of now, there are sadly still too many unknowns and uncertainties to organise and plan the event according to our quality requirements. We have, for example, not yet got any precise regulations regarding any required hygiene measures. Our event is associated with a high standard of quality of our service before, during and after the race. Many of these services can no longer be provided”.

Participants can dispose of the paid registration free as they wish

Economic considerations also play a role in the cancellation. “We need at least 600 participants to make our event viable. It is difficult to gauge if we can achieve this number”. The organisation committee concludes that “all these considerations have caused us to postpone the eighth edition of the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace to 2021.

Every participant who has already registered for the extreme mountain run along the horseshoe shaped Hufeisen tour in the Sarntal Alps can transfer the registration fee to 2021 at no extra charge. There is also the option of having the full price reimbursed or donating it to our club. Our time-keeper Datasport will set up the various options on its portal www.datasport.com, and all participants can choose their preferred option from 1 to 31 July.”

In 2021 there will again be four distances to choose from

The Südtirol Ultra Skyrace 2021 will take place from 27 to 29 August. The extreme athletes will be able to choose from 4 distances with different levels of difficulty. The Südtirol Ultra Skyrace, one of the most challenging and technically difficult extreme mountain runs in the world, is 121 kilometres long. On the legendary Hufeisen tour in the heart of the Sarntal Alps, the participants have to master a 7554 metres elevation gain.

The Südtirol Skyrace measures just over half of the "king's distance" (69 km/3930 m elevation), while the Südtirol Sky Marathon for mountain runners covers a distance of 42.2 km and 2863 m elevation. For less experienced athletes, on the other hand, the Südtirol Sky Trail with its 27 km long route and an elevation of about 1000 meters is the most suitable.
