Südtirol Ultra Skyrace
Extreme running race along the high mountain trail

Südtirol Ultra Skyrace successfully concluded

Bolzano, 30 July 2017 - On Sunday the fifth edition of the extreme mountain run along the Hufeisen tour in the Sarntal Alps concluded successfully. 114 extreme athletes completed the original distance of 121 kilometres and an altitude differential of 7554 m. With 196 at the start this corresponds to a completion rate of 58.16 percent. It has been shown once again: The Südtirol Ultra Skyrace is one of the most extreme trail runs in the Alpine region and even reaching the finish is a sensational success.

Roberto Conte from Milan had the honour to be the last official finisher of the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace 2017. The 47-year old reached finish at the Prati del Talvera in Bolzano on Sunday morning at 9:04 am after 37:02.52 hours. On the previous day Daniel Jung (Laces) and Maria Kemenater (Val Sarentino) came in as the winners of the extreme mountain run. Jung won in 18:33.12 hours, Kemenater in 21:58.18 hours, only 25 seconds below Annemarie Gross’s track record.

The winners at the Südtirol Skyrace (69 km/3930 m altitude differential) were Stefan Tschurtschenthaler from Sesto and Daniela Oemus from Germany. Oemus achieved the only track record. She ran the race in 8:32.12 hours and improved the previous record by around 18 minutes. Tschurtschenthaler’s victory time was 7:34.49 hours. All in all 167 athletes reached the finish - with 182 runners at the start this is a strong ratio of 92 percent.

The Südtirol Sky Marathon was won by the Austrian Daniel Rohringer (4:14.49) and Lorenza Bortoluzzi (5:38.29) from Trentino. Here, 208 mountain runners received their finisher medals - with 214 runners at the start this represents a sensational 97 percent.

The happy Organising Committee takes stock

Chair of the Organising Committee, Josef Günther Mair, of the Association ASV Südtirol Ultra Skyrace, looks back at the event: “For many extreme athletes the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace has by now become a fixed date.” This year for the first time we had more than 600 registrations. The participants were delighted with our event. This makes us organizers very happy indeed. I congratulate all participants on their performance. Everyone who has attempted one of the three distances can consider themselves to be a winner, even if one or the other did not make it to the finish. I would also like to thank our 500 volunteers and the 80 strong mountain rescue team very very much for their efforts. Without them, such an event would not be possible. Nor would it be possible without our strong partners Sportler, La Sportiva, Raiffeisen and a countless number of further sponsors.”

The Südtirol Ultra Skyrace will take place again in 2018. Then, the extreme mountain race along the Hufeisen tour in the Sarntal Alps will run from 27 to 29 July.  Many of this year’s finishers will already be entering this date firmly into their calendars.
