Südtirol Ultra Skyrace
Extreme running race along the high mountain trail

New record number of participants at the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace

Bolzano, 25 July 2017 - On Monday, 17 July registrations closed for the 5th Südtirol Ultra Skyrace (28 to 30 July). It is now official: with 635 registrations from 29 countries a new astonishing record has been achieved for the extreme mountain run along the Hufeisentour in the Sarntal Alps.

Last year 519 extreme athletes took part. This year, the number increased by 116 runners, 22.35 percent, to 635 athletes at the start. The number of participating countries rose from 19 to 29, a healthy growth of 53 percent. Chair of the Organising Committee Josef Günther Mair is delighted with these figures.

“The Südtirol Ultra Skyrace is growing step by step. At the beginning of the year we had set ourselves a target of 600 runners at the start. We were able to exceed this marker. It is also fantastic that the athletes are fairly evenly distributed across all three distances and that we were also able to record an increase over the original distance of 121 kilometres and 7554 meters altitude differential. The number of women at the start almost doubled”, Mair explained. 221 extreme athletes will attempt the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace at the weekend, 189 the Südtirol Skyrace (69 kilometres/3930 m altitude differential) and 225 are racing towards the finish of the Sky Marathon (42.2/2863).

Gaining international renown

The organisers are very keen to make the run more widely known internationally. “Considering that we were able to increase the number of participating nations by 50% compared to last year, I would say this is an outstanding success”, commented Mair. Of the total of 635 runners 391 are from Italy (almost 62 percent), 101 from Germany and 31 from Austria. The field also includes extreme mountain runners from Australia, Brazil, Japan and Canada.

The athletes, those who accompany them and the many expected spectators can look forward to a varied supporting programme. In the area around the start on Piazza Walther in Bolzano (Friday evening from 7:00 pm) and over the weekend in the start and finish areas on Prati del Talvera all visitors of the Südtirol Ultra Skyrace will be looked after by the volunteers from the ASC Neugries. In Sarentino, the end point of the Sky Marathon and one of the places on the route of the Skyrace, all visitors will be spoilt by the Sarentino footballers, a team from the “E11ar” and the “Gasthof Post” restaurant. DJ Marlon and DJ Alex Stan provide the appropriate musical entertainment, presenters Josef Platter and Thomas Vonmetz help to create a lively atmosphere.

The Südtirol Ultra Skyrace is organised by the amateur sports association of the same name, in collaboration with Sportler and La Sportiva. Almost 500 volunteers are working hard during the event, including the mountain rescue services of the Alpine Associations Alpenverein Südtirol (BRD) and Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico Alto Adige (CNSAS) who in collaboration with the national emergency call centre ensure the safety of all participants.
